17 prototype class 628/0 sets were built for DB in the mid-1970s being based at Kempten depot. Thewy were the forerunners to a huge build of further 2-car sets during the 1980s and 1990s which largely dispaced loco hauled sets as well as 4-wheeled railbuses on non-electrified lines.
Seen at Schongau on 19 May 1992 is set 628.001 (coupled with 628.011) on train 5673, 16:04 Schongau to Weilheim (Oberbayern).
